Zachary’s delivery
The goal was to have a successful VBAC, as I had a medically necessary c-section with my first child. I was due April 20th. That day came, but baby wasn’t ready to show himself. The mid-wife I was seeing suggested that I see my Doctor to see how she was feeling about delivering a “late” baby. My Dr. felt that with a previous c-section delivering too late might result in tearing of the uterine scar. A c-section was scheduled for April 28th.
On the 24th, I had the Foley Bulb procedure done. It is a natural way of inducing labor. Inducing with medication isn’t possible once you have had a c-section. The procedure didn’t work. I was disappointed to say the least.
On the 27th, shortly before 4am my water broke. You can imagine my excitement. My husband and I waited for my parents to get to the house (to be with Tyler) before going to the hospital. We arrived at 5am. I really wasn’t having any contractions, I wasn’t in any pain, and I wasn’t dilating. Even though I had never labored, I knew this wasn’t right.
By 1pm, I was only 2cm and the Dr. couldn’t feel the head. Nine hours since my water broke and no progress. My high spirits had sunk way low as I realized a VBAC would not be happening. I called my parents and asked them to bring in my little Tyler. I needed to see his smiling face. I’m glad they made it before I was taken to surgery, because seeing him did make me feel better.
I was taken to surgery at 2:30pm, and by 3:01pm Zachary was born. He was 8lbs, 15oz, and 19 inches long with a head full of hair.
I’m glad that God sees the whole picture. I wanted to VBAC so badly, but that could’ve resulted in an emergency c-section(so said the Dr.) The point of least resistance is the uterine scar. If a baby is struggling to come through the birth canal, the point of least resistance would be the way out. That may have been the case since Zachary’s shoulders were so broad.
Almost two weeks have passed. I am still a little sore, but am recovering nicely. Tyler loves his new little brother. He is always giving Zachary kisses. We had gone out to lunch today, and as we were getting ready to leave Zachary started crying. Tyler went over the car seat, leaned down, and gave his brother a kiss. It’s like he was saying, “It’s ok Zachary. I’m here.”
I still can’t believe I am a mother of two, but I am enjoying it!
